Lesson 01: Stay Focused

Stay Focused

Lesson 1:

Our Focus or the

Center of Our Attention

Jesus must be the Center of a Christian’s Life to have a successful Future.

1. To Have a Successful Future you MUST follow God’s Instructions laid out in His Word.

Look at what God has to say in His Word:

(1.) Matthew 6: 24 – 33 – Matthew tells us to Seek the kingdom of God First.

No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Then, Matthew 7: 7 – 8 says, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

(2.) Luke 9: 23 – 25 – Luke tells us to deny ourselves and put Jesus First daily, for it is a choice you have to make everyday. You must realize that it is a cross, because you sacrifice your self will to do his will. Paul said, “I die daily.”

And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?

(3.) Matthew 4: 18 – 22 – The Disciples are commanded to Put Jesus First when He said, “Follow me.” And WE must do the same.

And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. And they straightway left their nets, and followed him. And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them. And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.

(4.) Acts 4: 13 – 21 & Acts 5: 17 – 32 – Putting Jesus First in the Face of Opposition. When you are threatened or when you are beaten, we must say as Peter said, “We ought to obey God rather than men.” We were never promised perfect peace and harmony with no suffering or pain. We are imperfect people living in an imperfect world full of sin, abuse, and all sorts of wickedness. That is why we need a Savior to save us from this sinful place.

Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus. And beholding the man which was healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it. But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves, Saying, What shall we do to these men? for that indeed a notable miracle hath been done by them is manifest to all them that dwell in Jerusalem; and we cannot deny it. But that it spread no further among the people, let us straitly threaten them, that they speak henceforth to no man in this name. And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye. For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard. So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding nothing how they might punish them, because of the people: for all men glorified God for that which was done.

Acts 4:13 -21

Then the high priest rose up, and all they that were with him, (which is the sect of the Sadducees,) and were filled with indignation, And laid their hands on the apostles, and put them in the common prison. But the angel of the Lord by night opened the prison doors, and brought them forth, and said, Go, stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life. And when they heard that, they entered into the temple early in the morning, and taught. But the high priest came, and they that were with him, and called the council together, and all the senate of the children of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought. But when the officers came, and found them not in the prison, they returned, and told, Saying, The prison truly found we shut with all safety, and the keepers standing without before the doors: but when we had opened, we found no man within. Now when the high priest and the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these things, they doubted of them whereunto this would grow. Then came one and told them, saying, Behold, the men whom ye put in prison are standing in the temple, and teaching the people. Then went the captain with the officers, and brought them without violence: for they feared the people, lest they should have been stoned. And when they had brought them, they set them before the council: and the high priest asked them, Saying, Did not we straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man’s blood upon us. Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men. The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree. Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins. And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.

Acts 5:17 – 32

(5.) Philippians 3: 7 – 14 – Tells us that Paul had and that we also should have a Jesus-First Attitude.

But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead. Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

Now name the 5 steps to a Successful Christian Future and give Scripture reference.

(1.)

(2.)

(3.)

(4.)

(5.)

2. If we follow His Word then you will have a successful Christian future He will be the Center of our Attention. Because when reading the Bible Jesus is the Center of Attention (the connecting theme) from Genesis to Revelation. And so must it be in our lives from beginning to the end. Jesus first others second and you last.

Now Let’s Look at some more people with this Jesus-First Attitude: So that you can have some people to look up to when you are threatened to give in to peer pressure or when you feel that you are beaten.

The Prophet Jeremiah put God first in his life at a young age. According to Jer. 1: 6, God called him to be a prophet while he was still young.  Jeremiah could have Quit and give in to the peer pressure of his day:

Because he never saw one person in his entire ministry get saved and he was known as the “Weeping Prophet.”

Because it was not until his death and the writing of the Bible in their language, and even in the languages of today, that Jeremiah’s ministry had some results in soul winning.

Because they cut his tongue out, burned his writings that God had given him, and put him in prison, Jeremiah never quit, backed down, or gave up.  And God gave it all back to him again so that we can enjoy the reading of the portion of the Word that Jeremiah penned down.  God Also used Jeremiah to:

Alert Judah of coming Judgment To Repent and Turn Back to God

To Prophecy of Future Blessings and Promises

To Prophecy of Our Savior

Look at Our Reading: Jeremiah 33: 14 – 15 He foretold of Jesus’ ministry – as the Savior of the World and also as the Judge of the World.

Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will perform that good thing which I have promised unto the house of Israel and to the house of Judah. In those days, and at that time, will I cause the Branch of righteousness to grow up unto David; and he shall execute judgment and righteousness in the land.

(2.) The Branch of Righteousness mentioned in Jeremiah was to be the promised Messiah. Jesus fulfilled the prophecy: came to earth as a man (born in a manger), grew and did many miracles among them, and died and rose again and became the Savior of the World. His Disciples then preached the Great Commission.

And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Mat. 28: 18 – 20

Read Acts 2: 21 – 24, 36, 38 & 41. Peter preached to the religious crowd that good deeds, Jewish pride, praying, helping the poor and the law was not going to save them. But repentance would.

And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know: Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain: Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it. Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ. Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

There is only one way to have a relationship with God and that is through Jesus Christ. That is why He should be the center of attention in your life. You can’t know God through Church Membership, good deeds, or morals you must put your trust solely in Him.  For his stand, Peter was beaten and put in prison and eventually the religious crowd killed him. But Peter kept on keeping on even until his death.

(3.) The writer of Hebrews wrote a letter to the Jews scattered throughout the world who were considering rejecting Christianity and returning back to Judaism. His main purpose was to encourage them to stay focused on Christ and not give up even though they were facing persecution.  And young people that is what I am doing here today, I want to encourage you to not give up or give in to peer pressure – – stay focused and keep a Jesus-First Attitude.

Read Hebrews 8: 1, 6 – 10

Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises. For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second. For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah: Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord. For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:

In the Old Testament a priest stood before God as a representative for the people. Jesus brought a better way. The Old Testament required a blood sacrifice from an unblemished animal. (Heb. 9: 12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.) Jesus shed his blood so that all could be forgave if you only repent and believe. We no longer depend on sacrifices but on Christ’s blood that he shed for us. (Heb. 13: 20-21 Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.) Righteousness comes “through the blood of the everlasting covenant” –Jesus Christ.

Will you make Jesus Lord of your Life? Dear friend, are you saved?

Dear Christian friend the Lord deserves your attention. Give him first place in your life. Spend time with Him daily in prayer and study. You can not be close to God by focusing on fashion, television, sports, or peers. Nor, can He be Lord on Sunday and forgotten the rest of the week. Jesus must be the center of our attention in our lives. What are you focusing on: Christ, sports, dating, school, or others or other things? Make Him Lord of your life today and enjoy a successful Christian Future in spite of opposition.
