Being Spirit Filled
“And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;”
There are many things in Scripture which are misunderstood. Being filled with the Spirit is one of them. In some circles it is believed that there is a second blessing of, and indwelling of the Holy Spirit. This is a common misconception. The thought which is conveyed here is not to have more of the Holy Spirit, but that the Holy Spirit might have more of you. When you became a Christian, the Holy Spirit of God came to dwell in you. He took up a permanent residence in your soul for all time and eternity. He is in you. You can not get any more than that. As a child of God you have received all of the Holy Ghost that you ever will. Yet He has not received all of you that He ever will…
I like the way that A.W. Tozer illustrates this principle. He said to get in a boat and go out on the sea. Once you are far from land, hold a bottle overboard until it fills with water. It is full, you cannot get any more water into the bottle. This is what you have when you get saved, you are filled with the Holy Spirit. Now, drop the full bottle into the sea and it sinks. This is the teaching which is conveyed by this verse. Like the bottle, we are to be filled and to allow ourselves to be totally engulfed in the Spirit of God. This is what Ezekiel is speaking of when he writes of “waters to swim in.”
Alcohol is a powerful drink and in excess it will cause a man to lose control of himself. We are not to be drunk with wine, wherein is excess but to be filled with the Spirit. That means that the Spirit is to have control of us. Just as the river in Ezekiel’s prophecy. Just as you are carried on the waters of a river. You are to be carried by the Holy Spirit. You are to allow the Spirit to have control, to be in command, and you are to be yielded to His will. Only when we yield and allow Him total control will we ever be able to enjoy the Spirit filled life.
