“For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God;”
Sickness Unto Death:
The Church Today
As we look around us there is no doubt that the church is in trouble today. Everyone seems to be looking for something. The great problem with this is that when a person is looking for something out of a church, it is not a need but a want. And you can rest assured that just about anyone can find just about anything they want in some church. You can also rest assured of two things after this…
1. it is probably not what they need,
2. it is probably not of God,
It seems that fashionable religion will offer better youth programs, and little perks like trips to this theme park or that casino. Along with a steady diet of preaching on the end-time prophecies and how not to be a Pharisee or a legalist. The church is nothing like it used to be. It is not anything like it ought to be. And the sad truth is that what little bit of the world is not in church see’s it better than God’s people seem too. We have been so long arguing about being pharicaical or legalistic that we have lapsed into Liberalism and now we are too weak and blind to know it. The world knows better. Listen to this out of U.S. News and World Report.
A few weeks ago I preached a message in Nettleton on “Why God’s people are not growing” This seems to be message two along that line.
Sick Unto Death:
The Church Today
Look at this passage—
(I) Verse 12 “For when for the time ye ought to be teachers,”
This tells us obviously that this is not a message to new converts. These people have been saved long enough to be past dog-paddling in the shallow end of the pool. Immaturity plagues us today. Examples,
A. Preferred Subject matter (prophecy, prosperity)
B. Preferred time of attendance
D.L. Moody – Sunday School
Christian? — Holidays
There was a time Sunday meant going to church
(II) “Ye have need”
It is amazing to me how little people actually know of God and His word. Including, and especially preachers.
“ye have need that one teach you again”
This tells us that these people have been taught already but they have forgotten or forsaken what they once knew.
(III) “And are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.”
I am glad to know, praise God, that this is no new problem. This was written around 64 A.D. The church has, since that time, gotten tired and now is down again and refusing to eat.
Look now at verses 13 and 14. The last words of verse 14 are the main symptom in our diagnosis of the church’s condition, notice.
“to discern both good and evil,”
This tells us that a child of God, a Christian, a saved person Can get so far away from God that he doesn’t even know right from wrong anymore! Well, we are there and people act like they can’t see it.
We are in a mess!
What can we do about it?
Grow up. Doctor’s orders
3. Exercise – use what you have received
