“Then is the offense of the cross ceased.”
Where is the offense of the cross?
The preaching of the cross had been perverted and Paul addresses this. Paul here suggests that the offense of the cross has never, will never and can never cease. It is foolish to believe it will. Christianity is mild, peaceful, and benevolent but it has always been bitterly hated and attacked. It is still offensive to a lost world. There is no reason to believe that things are different now for the gospel has not changed and neither has the world.
I. Where is the offense of the cross?
A. It’s doctrine of atonement offends human pride.
1. men want social reform and education (John 1:19:22)
2. but men need sacrifice (John 1:29)
B. It’s simplicity offends man’s wisdom
1. men are easily deceived but the gospel is simple
2. the gospel is the “power of God unto salvation
Many claim to believe in the death burial and resurrection, which is the gospel of Christ. And yet they want to add works to it themselves. My friends, my works did not lose me, Adam’s did. My works cannot save me but Christ’s. To teach otherwise is to teach error.
Jude verse 11
Most folks want something new
(Acts 17:18-21) “some new thing”
I want the old old story, it is still “the power of God”
The ground is level at the foot of the cross, no bit I’s and little you’s.
C. It addresses all as sinners which offends the Pharisees
Luke 18:9-14 boy this man was proud huh?
Matthew 5:20 your righteousness must exceed this
D. It’s holiness offends man’s love of sin
II. How is this offense shown?
A. By the persecution of believers
B. By slandering, sneering at them as
1. old fashioned
3. weak minded
C. By refusing to preach the cross – Christless, bloodless
Gospel in other words
1. leave out the lordship of Christ so as not to offend
2. leave out the blood so as not to address sin
People don’t want to be subject to the Lord
People don’t want to see themselves for what they are
Romans 3:10 all are sinners
1John 4:7-10 The cross manifested the Love of God toward us
Romans 5:8 But God commendeth His love toward us
