A man Undone

“And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? There is none good but one, that is God. Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother. And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I kept from my youth. Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.”

Mark 10:17-21

In the world of religion around us today we see no resemblance to what the world once knew religion to be. Religion used to bring to mind a different kind of person; a non religious man thought of a religious man as one who feared God, loved church, loved people, loved the bible, read the bible and prayed. Religion used to mean something to everyone. Well, the right “something”. David Brainerd was trying to carry religion to the American Indian. George Whitefield, Sam Jones, and Billy Sunday; those great revivalists blazed across our land preaching that men needed a good dose of religion. They were right. There are, by far, too many religious men in the world and there is not enough religion. According to James 1:27 Religion means something totally different than most consider today.

“Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.” James 1:27

Pure religion has a selfless, sacrificial, loving concern for others and a desire to see to the needs of others above ourselves. When we look at religion in our day, that is certainly not what we see.

Let’s look at this rich young ruler. We already know that he was a Jew. He was a ruler in Israel, he had to be a Jew. Being such, guess where he went to work? The temple, of course. That would tell us that he was religious. Being such we know that he was an intelligent and educated man of some esteem. Yet this religious man could still admit to the Lord that he was lost. “What must I do, that I may inherit eternal life?” He knew that he needed something that religious practice just could not do for him.

That outdoes most religious folks in our day. Most folks would rather die and go to hell than admit that they need to be saved. Yes, you can be religious and still be lost. He was, a ruler, a man of means, position, and power. Yet he still was humble enough to admit that that was not enough to merit heaven. In our day, every crook that finds the church to be a good business venture is convinced that they are ok. Just look at what they are doing; Merchandizing in the church houses, taking advantage of church people, cheating on their taxes, lying about their neighbors. Preachers and religious leaders all over the country are getting wrapped up in adulterous relationships, leaving their wives, running off with the piano player or singer or Sunday school teacher. And they still will defend themselves to you.

If a person can live a wicked sinful lifestyle and be guilty of the same sin over and over, and God does not deal with that person in some way, they ARE NOT SAVED!!! You read it hear folks. Extra! Extra! Read all about it! If you can live like the devil and it does not bother you, YOU ARE NOT SAVED! Don’t get mad, get right. Most people who claim to be Christian today, have just got a little religion, and no Jesus.

I can’t tell how many times I have heard someone say “Well I am a good person, I don’t do anyone any wrong, I am honest with my neighbor, and in all my dealings, I believe that God will be lenient to me. I don’t believe that God will send me to hell.” And that is dead wrong. Look again at that young man. He, according to the scripture, was a good man. He told the Lord that he did not commit adultery, did not kill, did not steal, did not lie, did not cheat, and honored his father and mother; And no where did Jesus call him a liar. The Lord did not correct him in this. He was a good man, and lost. He still did not have eternal life. A person can lie to themselves all they want too, being a good person will not do it when you stand before a Holy God. You must be saved. Look at what we find in Matt. 7:21-23.

“Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? And in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”

These are preachers and workers of wonders and miracles. And they are not saved. They did not lose their salvation, they never were saved. Look at the words of our Lord. “I NEVER KNEW YOU” and understand that these were never saved. Yet they were doing many works in His name. Yet not for Him. They were religious and merchandising on the church and their religion. They are all about us today, and many of them that will be in that crowd we just read are just down the street.

You can also see that this young man was a misguided man. He was a product of the religious system of his day. He was a ruler in Israel. He was trained in the manner and traditions of his forefathers. Y’know what that means? He mimicked those that had gone before. That is exactly what we have today. The majority of preaching that you hear is only preached because the one preaching heard someone else preach is. It did not come from time alone with God, it came from another man. Many of our preachers and religious leaders are the products of the current religious system in America. He was a product of the religious system in his day. Yet he knew he was not saved. His heart was not right with God. And when Jesus showed him this, he went away sorrowful. Notice the commandments that Jesus listed for him. The ones listed very loudly emphasize the absence of those not mentioned. Jesus did not mention

Thou shalt have no other Gods before me

Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image

Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God

in vain

Remember the Sabbath day to keep it Holy

Thou shalt not covet.

These that were not mentioned are amazing to look at. The first four are a direct result of the last one. To covet riches is to have a god before The True God, that also means that they have a graven image. In this attitude to do anything in the name of God is to take the name of the Lord in vain. It is for the wrong reason, for the wrong god. And he was guilty of this and did not realize it. So the Lord pointed it out to him when he gave him direction. He knew where the young man’s affections lay. He knew what his problem was, and the young man went away. Jesus did not hide the truth from him, he gave him just what he needed and in the right way. The young man made his choice, knowing full well what he was doing. He went away sorrowful.

But, he had our religious crowd here in America beaten hands down. His character and attitude backed most of the religious players in this country clear off the board. They don’t even rate a score next to this young man. Lost young ruler 5, religious Americans 0. There are many religious people who have no religion, but a devil’s religion. A demonically influence religion that is fed on and at the same time feeds their own pride and arrogance. “I have been in church for 30 years and a deacon for 20 of them, you had better believe that I am saved. Don’t preach to me about chastisement.”

For the record, in closing; If you can live ungodly and God does nothing about it; if sin does not bother you, you are not saved. A little humility could mean the difference between heaven and hell. Are you saved? This fine young man in Mark chapter ten was not.
